RE:

Changes to Coverage of Certain Over-the-Counter (OTC) Drugs


The Department of Healthcare and Family Services recently announced changes to the drug program affecting over-the-counter (OTC) products. The Department has revised the policy. Select products in some of the classes will continue to be covered. Changes are noted in bold and underline below:

Products in the following classes will not be covered effective August 1, 2005, unless another date is noted:

Antacids/Acid Reducers (Effective September 1, 2005)
Iron Replacement
Laxatives
Lice Treatment
Non-Sedating Antihistamines
Pain Relief/Analgesics

Products in the following classes will not be covered effective August 1, 2005, except for the specific products mentioned:

Topical Antifungal Preparations (Department will continue to cover clotrimazole 1% cream)

Topical Hydrocortisone Preparations (Department will continue to cover hydrocortisone 1% cream and ointment)

Products in the following classes, which were previously announced as discontinued, will continue to be covered:

Artificial Tears
Saline Nasal Spray
Topical Antibiotic Preparations

There will be no changes to coverage of OTC drugs for children under the age of 21.
